Day 3 - Harpers Ferry, Shendandoah Valley National Park, Charlottesville

An early start due to hire car booked at 7.30 am from Regan Nationl Airport. We picked up an SUV (sports utility vehicle 4x4) and have found that it is economical. There were a number of choices which would have been wonderful to drive but expensive to run. Made it out of D.C. to Point of Rocks, Maryland then to Brunswick and on to Harpers Ferry. This is the site of events that triggered the Civil war. Paul got some train action

and weather was good but maybe a bit too hot! We had lunch in the sleepy historic town and then drove to Front Royal to enter the Skyline Drive -105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Shenandoah National Park has wonderful views  (ohh I feel a John Denver song coming on). We drove for two hours along this twisting road a40 mph and then turned off east to Charlottesville the home of Thomas Jefferson.
We completed 220 miles only 4000 + to go!
