Awake early today! We are lucky to arrive on time at the correct destination because Hurricane Irene has caused chaos across the Eastern Seaboard with flights to New york and Boston from the UK cancelled. The storm front has moved north from New Jersey into rural Vermont. Apart from a few leaves and branches on the ground here in DC, there is nothing to indicate heavy wind and rain. Locals are talking more about the recent earthquake that registered 5.9 on the Richter scale!. Luckily it was deep and only a few buildings are closed as they are inspected the damage. Our first day was rather humid and 27 C
We went to the National Mall area and visited the Smithsonian Art Gallery and Sculpture Gardens in the morning and the National Air and Space Museum (which claims it is the most visted museum in the world). Metro travelling and walking for the rest of the day. In the evening we went on a Monuments by Moonlight tour including; theThomas Jefferson Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Korean Memorial, Martin Luther King Memorial (opened in August) and the Lincoln Memorial. We have already met some really nice people and a fellow blogger at one of the musuems.
