Day 22 - Reno, Nevada

Whilst Reno is known for being a gambling town, it is much smaller than Las Vegas. Nevada  has been particularly impacted by the current economic conditions with associated higher than average unemployment figures. Apparently less people are visiting to gamble these days.

Reno made the national news shortly before our arrival because of a tragic accident at the annual air races held outside the town. A P-51 Mustang racing plane went out of control and dived into the tarmac close to spectators sitting on "box seats" in front of the grandstand. 11 people including the pilot were killed and many more were injured. Locals we spoke to still cannot believe it.

We have been using some promotional vouchers to stay in some motels. The voucher for Reno allowed us to stay at the Ramada for a mere £30 or so. This is one of our cheapest nights! These voucher booklets can be picked up in petrol stations, supermarkets and motels.
